More On Biofuels

Posted by Eric de Place
Another perspective on the biofuels debate.

Last week I wrote about two studies that cast biofuels production in a worrisome light, and about what that could mean for public policy.

Over at Climate Solutions, researcher Patrick Mazza takes a dim view of the two studies, and a sunnier view of biofuels' potential.

Update 3/13/07: Patrick just posted a second installment. (A third is yet to come.)

Thanks for posting this, Eric. Though I would say my take on the studies is not dim, but measured. In fact, I'd say Fargione has it pretty well nailed about direct land use impacts of forest and grassland conversions for biofuels crops. I do give some critiques of Searchinger on indirect land use impacts - This study does seem to tip toward negative assumptions. But I still think this study raises concerns we cannot afford not to address.
