Sign up now to text for rides.

High-tech hitchhiking is getting closer to prime time.

Goose Networks has now opened its system of real-time ride matching statewide in Washington, though it's not activating the service in particular locales until it has a critical mass of participants there.

Wherever you live, you can register at www.readysetgoose.com. Goose Networks will be in touch when enough of your neighbors have signed up, so you can start "texting" for rides.

My family and I started our car-free life last September. I started a blog about the experience mainly because I wanted a community support network and also because I was taking it one day at a time, similiar to an addict quitting. It's difficult going without a car as an adult in this society, especially with kids. I don't know what the future will bring but it's October 7 and my car has been parked since August. This blog has really helped me build confidence. Some friends and family still think we're nuts. But I've had enough of cars and I really believe I can slowly build a life without them. I've lost weight and feel more relaxed with the buffer of a commute which now includes walking and busing before I return home each day. Thanks to you all for the words of encouragement.

Wow, Susan, what a great weblog!

I've been carless for 25 years (which is actually for my entire adult life). So, it's very easy for me to take being carfree for granted. However, just this morning, I was thinking that if I had kids then being carfree would probably be a huge pain in the behind.

But after reading your weblog, it sounds like you are actually becoming closer to your kids (love that "negotiable" cellphone and those upcoming trips to Germany!), plus your husband, and your friends!

I hope you continue to enjoy carfree freedom and all the wonderful benefits it brings.

Best,

Michelle
