Alan Durning makes a case for well-planned neighborhoods tonight on KOMO television.

If you’re in range, tune into KOMO television (channel 4 in Seattle) tonight at 5 pm to see Alan Durning taking carlessness to the streets – literally.

KOMO’s John Sharify interviewed Alan this sunny morning and caught footage of the Durning family's car-less experiment in action, telling the story of how a neighborhood like theirs – compact, with nearby shops and services, bike and pedestrian-friendly street design, and good bus service – has made the year-long experiment possible.

I was somewhat disappointed in KOMO's story. I was hoping for a story that was stronger but it was in McNugget news style(brief) but at least the word is leaking out. Furthermore, instead of focusing solely on the Durning's good deeds, the reporters commented on how difficult it would be to bike in the Winter. Perhaps interviewing Alan on that topic would have been educational, eh?

Regardless, some press is better than none!

Agreed.

TV news doesn't go much beyond what can be readily photographed. Many of the larger points we discussed--building neighborhoods to make cars less necessary, etc.--ended up on the clipping room floor. The story as broadcast doesn't even mention Sightline. Fortunately, the online version gives viewers a way to get more information.

On the up side, the piece was filmed well. Camera man Brad actually had me haul him around in the Burley so he could film me up close. He also ran along behind, holding his camera and ground level. As a result, it's a funner segment to watch than previous coverage -- lots of motion and energy.

You were hauling around the camera man in the Burley? That totally explains those *loudly* creaking wheels then :-)
