Better Building Bill -- Passes!

Washington makes energy-efficient building the law.

Governor Christine Gregoire is expected today to sign into law a new green building bill for Washington. The bill, which I described at greater length in an earlier post, will require new state-funded buildings to meet higher standards for energy efficiency. Though construction will cost a little more upfront, the buildings actually save money over their lifetimes and, of course, use less energy and reduce waste to boot.

Washington is the first state in the nation to approve such legislation. Encouragingly, the bill passed both the state's House (78-19) and Senate (32-16) with broad bipartisan support.
